Making your mark-ers

I consider myself a no-frills person. I don’t usually wear jewelry, and I don’t exactly consider myself girly, but for some reason, when I saw some of the stitch markers at Etsy.com. I knew I had to have some.

But instead of buying them, I decided I’d make some myself. Did I mention I’m cheap too?

I figured there would be three parts to the markers:

  1. A ring to fit into the knitting needles.
  2. Beads for decoration.
  3. Something to hold them together.

So I went to the local craft shop, and bought myself a selection of pretty, shiny beads. For the markers I got some jewelry toggles (I just threw away the bars that act as fasteners, and kept the rings). To hold them together I found some fancy pins.

Materials I used to make my stitch markers

The hardest part was twisting the pins to hold the beads and rings together. They were pretty thick. I had to use a pair of tiny pliers I found in a drawer.

Steps I took to make the stitch markers

Considering I’d never done any kind of jewelry making, I think they came out pretty well. I was so pleased that I went on to make some markers for my crochet projects.

Since in crochet the markers don’t go on the needles, but into the stitches, I used leverback earrings instead of rings. And while the pins had served me well, I decided to try jewelry wire this time, which is thinner, thus easier to manipulate.

Crochet markers

All in all I spent about $25USD. I made 16 markers, and have enough materials to make at least another 12. My craftsmanship is not as good as the one of the Esty people, but I’m happy with the result.

  2. Very pretty markers! I might actually even have the makings for some myself…and to think I’ve just been using scrap yarn loops for markers. I feel so deprived, I’ll have to make some tomorrow! Thanks for the ideas!

  4. WOW. I was surfing for stitch markers for a swap when your page popped up. I was wondering how different would the markers be and lo and behold what a treasure. I could use them as ear rings too. Good work and beautiful taste in beads and colours.
